How are hot-melt finished fiber tails made

Hot-melt finished fiber tails are created by inserting stripped and cleaned optical fibers into connectors preloaded with heat-meltable adhesive, which is liquefied in a high-temperature oven and then cooled to secure the fiber.

Process Overview

  1. Preparation of Tools and Workspace Before starting, gather all necessary tools, including fiber strippers, cleaning materials, and a high-temperature hot-melt oven. Work in a well-lit, dust-free area to prevent contamination and ensure visibility of the fiber during termination .
  2. Heating the Connector Hot-melt connectors come with adhesive preloaded inside. The connector is placed in a special oven heated to 245–270°C (473–518°F) until the adhesive becomes liquid . The oven must be handled with extreme caution to avoid burns, and nothing flammable should be placed on it .
  3. Fiber Stripping and Cleaning The optical fiber is stripped of its protective coatings and cleaned thoroughly to remove any debris or oils. Proper stripping ensures the fiber can be inserted smoothly into the molten adhesive without introducing defects .
  4. Inserting the Fiber Once the adhesive is liquefied, the stripped and cleaned fiber is inserted into the connector. The fiber must be positioned correctly to ensure optimal optical performance and minimal signal loss .
  5. Cooling and Setting After insertion, the connector is removed from the oven and allowed to cool. The adhesive solidifies, securing the fiber in place. Timing is critical: the fiber should remain in the oven long enough to liquefy the adhesive (at least 1 minute) but not so long that it fails to set upon cooling (typically under 10 minutes), .
  6. Cleave and Polish Once the adhesive has set, the fiber end is cleaved and polished to create a smooth, flat surface. This step ensures low optical loss and minimal reflectance at the fiber end .

Advantages and Considerations

  • Preloaded Adhesive: Hot-melt connectors simplify field terminations by eliminating the need to handle epoxy separately .
  • High-Temperature Requirement: The oven operates at much higher temperatures than epoxy curing ovens, requiring careful handling .
  • Consistency: Properly executed hot-melt terminations provide reliable optical performance, though polishing skill is still essential .
  • Comparison to Other Methods: Unlike anaerobic adhesives, hot-melt connectors require heat but are easier to use in the field than heat-cured epoxies, which need longer curing times and specialized ovens . By following these steps and safety precautions, hot-melt finished fiber tails can be produced efficiently with strong mechanical stability and high optical quality.
