Optical Cable Specification Code Table

Optical cables are classified and color-coded according to the TIA/EIA-598-D standard, which defines outer jacket colors, inner fiber sequences, and connector/boot colors for reliable identification.

Fiber Cable Classification

Outer Jacket Color (Fiber Type Identification): The outer jacket color quickly indicates the fiber type and mode:

  • Orange – OM1/OM2 Multimode
  • Aqua – OM3/OM4 Multimode
  • Emerald Green – OM5 Multimode
  • Yellow – OS2 Single-mode
  • Other colors – Custom or hybrid cables with printed legends for fiber type

Inner Fiber Color Sequence

Each fiber within a multi-fiber cable is color-coded using a 12-color sequence. For cables with more than 12 fibers, the sequence repeats with added stripes or markers:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua For high-count cables (>12 fibers), the Tube and Fiber system is used: the 12-color sequence is applied to the buffer tube, and then repeated for fibers inside the tube. For example, Fiber #34 would be the 10th fiber (Violet) in the 3rd tube (Green) of a 48-fiber cable .

Connector and Boot Color Coding

Connector boots indicate fiber mode and polish type:

  • UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) Single-mode – Blue boot
  • APC (Angled Physical Contact) Single-mode – Green boot
  • Multimode (OM1/OM2) – Beige boot
  • Multimode (OM3/OM4/OM5) – Aqua boot This ensures proper matching and reduces back reflection or insertion loss during installation .
