HP 6600 Switch Network Aggregation

The HP 6600 switch supports both static trunk groups and dynamic 802.3ad link aggregation to combine multiple ports into a single logical link for higher bandwidth and redundancy.

Overview of Link Aggregation

Link aggregation on the HP 6600 switch allows multiple physical Ethernet ports to function as a single logical interface, called an aggregate link. This provides:

  • Increased bandwidth by combining multiple ports.
  • Redundancy, so if one port fails, traffic continues on the remaining ports.
  • Load sharing, distributing traffic across all member ports. The switch supports Layer 2 aggregation groups on SAP modules operating in bridge mode .

Types of Aggregation

  1. Static Trunk Groups
    • Manually configured groups of ports.
    • Up to 8 ports per trunk group.
    • Each trunk group must start with a primary port, which is the lowest-numbered port in the range.
    • Ports in a trunk group must connect to the same device at the other end, such as a server with multiple NICs or another switch .
  2. Dynamic 802.3ad Link Aggregation
    • Uses the LACP protocol to automatically manage trunk groups.
    • Ports negotiate membership dynamically.
    • Only one type of aggregation (static or dynamic) can be applied per port .

Configuration Guidelines

  • Port Membership: A port cannot be part of a static trunk group if 802.3ad aggregation is enabled.
  • Number of Trunk Groups: Up to 64 trunk groups can be configured on a chassis device.
  • Load Sharing: Traffic can be distributed based on MAC addresses, IP addresses, or both, depending on the configuration .
  • Redundancy: If a member port fails, traffic is automatically rerouted to remaining ports in the group.
  • Server Requirements: Servers must have multiple NICs or multi-port adapters sharing the same MAC and IP address to terminate a trunk group properly .

Best Practices

  • Ensure all ports in a trunk group are connected to the same device to avoid loops or misconfigurations.
  • Use consistent load-sharing criteria across the network to prevent uneven traffic distribution.
  • Monitor port status and aggregate health using the switch's management interface or console.
  • For high-availability setups, combine aggregation with spanning tree protocol to prevent network loops. By following these guidelines, the HP 6600 switch can efficiently aggregate multiple links, improving network performance and reliability for servers and inter-switch connections .
