Standard Dimensions

Width: Cable trays typically range from 50 mm to 900 mm (approximately 2 to 36 inches), depending on the number and type of cables to be accommodated . Narrow trays are used for small data lines, while wider trays are suitable for industrial or high-capacity installations . Depth (Side Wall Height): Standard depths range from 50 mm to 150 mm (2 to 6 inches), which helps maintain cable shape and prevents sagging or overcrowding . Length: Most cable trays are manufactured in 3-meter (10-foot) sections, which balances ease of transport and installation . In some industrial applications, lengths can extend up to 12, 20, 24, 30, or even 40 feet, depending on support spacing and load requirements . Rung Spacing (for ladder trays): Ladder-type trays have rung spacings of 6, 9, 12, or 18 inches, with smaller spacings recommended for small-diameter control and instrumentation cables, and wider spacings for large power cables .

Material Thickness

Cable tray thickness varies by material and load requirements:

  • Steel trays (galvanized or painted) typically have thicknesses ranging from 1.5 mm to 3 mm for standard applications, with thicker gauges used for heavy-duty or long-span installations .
  • Aluminum trays are lighter and corrosion-resistant, with thicknesses generally between 1.5 mm and 2.5 mm, depending on the alloy and environmental conditions .
  • Stainless steel trays are used in corrosive environments and may have similar or slightly higher thicknesses to ensure structural integrity . The thickness of the tray directly affects load capacity, structural strength, and long-term durability, and must be selected according to the expected cable weight, environmental factors, and applicable standards .

Selection Guidelines

  • Cable fill: Trays should be filled to no more than 40% of their cross-sectional area to allow heat dissipation and prevent overheating .
  • Support spacing: Short-span trays are supported every 6–8 feet, intermediate spans every 10–12 feet, and long spans up to 20 feet or more, with thickness and material chosen accordingly .
  • Compliance: Ensure trays meet NEC, NEMA, or IEC standards for safety, load, and fire resistance . By considering these dimensions and thicknesses, engineers and installers can select cable trays that are safe, code-compliant, and suitable for both current and future cabling needs.
